Hello everyone this is Margaret Manning with sixty and me this is the place where women over 60 come to be inspired my guest today is Cat Kabira Cat is a yoga teacher in the beautiful Bali and she’s joining us today to talk about how to get started with yoga again you know Cat is amazing she said she been up practicing and teaching yoga for twenty years and works with older people and she knows what’s on our mind and understands the issues that we might be facing not you know when starting yoga in our 60’s so welcome Cat welcome to the show thank you so much my pleasure I’m really really glad to have you here today because you know a lot of older women started yoga when they were younger and loved it and then got got lost in life in and didn’t continue and when we asked them in the community whether they were interested in yoga about 250 people said YES, BUT…

And I’d like to talk to you about that yes but because right we know the benefits of yoga, we talked about that but you know what when people start thinking about doing yoga its the come up with excuses and some bad ones so let’s talk about first of all the the and statement that you know I’m really not fit enough to do yoga I’m not flexible I’ll this is my one right, right, right…

That is probably the most common question that I’m asked and and to me my response is always THAT’S WHY YOU DO YOGA! it’s going to make you flexible it’s going to get you in shape and what i like it it a kind method of getting in shape and being flexible it’s a practice of non-competition she you know so especially if you’re practicing yoga by yourself then you really get to watch out you might be competing with yourself but it’s really yoga is a practice where you come as you are and what’s so fun especially if there’s tension there you start practicing every day or every couple days definitely do at least three times a week if you can and suddenly you’ll see wow it’s a change I’m I’m more flexible now I’ve gotten a little bit more a little stronger show its it method that works I think that’s a reason why yoga so popular and actually why it’s something they should fit every age range because there’s so much there so many gifts there and it really just starts wit committing to getting on the mat.

Okay so we’re on the mat well I mean yes here’s the challenge with older women and a much tighter women people in general is I think we talk ourselves into am you know negative situations middle and another a lot of women in their in there sixties have been very independent and resilient throughout their lives and they don’t like to ask for help you know what we were very kind and you were embarrassed to say I’m a complete beginner which is what most women said unit admits that you don’t know anything about this and be vulnerable yeah how do you say to someone then I’m a complete beginner I really don’t think I can do this right Maik I completely understand it because I go through myself when I wanna try something where I get intimidated because I wanna be perfect and really good in certain arenas inch here now you’re gonna see you know what a terrible dancer I am in show so I I understand and and I think that’s where it does become important issue to first acknowledge that we all have that that insecurity that shows up whenever you’re gonna try something new and each the freedom we drop that I need to be perfect and I mean that’s well actually the only reason why I stuck with yoga compared to any other thing she because a I never had to be perfect not ever having a perfect body H it’s not about some perfect job up there is no perfect yoga pose she and it actually is a practicing self-acceptance she in it’s why H it practice for if you have different injuries or different pain that happen she it’s not about being a certain way you know you’re not just trying to fit your body into a certain pose it’s really about here i am.

I’m listening to myself today how she and and I think that that sir edgy a Nike time others but it’s a it’s a inch and attitude shift yeah and getting on the maddening in really okay I love and accept myself as I am right now cuz let’s get real it’s really easy for us to love and accept ourselves we feel beautiful initialed by Britain energetic Jenna energize bitch you like happens and I think especially the longer we’re here in life he owed me know what it’s like to have those train crashes and and lost and and bad days and hormone fluctuations Ange and pain that just seems to come out of nowhere Ange moodiness and you know it so many things not being in control and you the human experience should and in you that to me is the meeting at the human experience she so that the past statement and I think that a lot of people understand that it’s a very powerful statement and I think that its I guess the message here is it’s okay to be a beginner it’s okay to be vulnerable and just as you said just to you meet your insecurities and embrace them and you know I go for it an yet another one another situation that am the comes up a lot and because put is the media I mean when you go into shock for yoga clothes they’re all size to me you know you face image that the only people on the planet who are capable and worthy doing a yoga are you know 18 25-year-old 18 to 25-year-olds who are already perfectly fit and and a No and in good health am and you know I’m not that you know I’m a low great time I’m a little bit and my subjects except taxable earlier but I’m just not that stereotype so right maybe you could share your thoughts on that how do you overcome it yeah I mean it’s something I deal with even inner it being in the media you know then it you what is the only thing that we’re were portraying in what is the real practice in the yolk each you know his on one level and some in the practice the rush there are literally hundreds if not thousands to differ transit yoga styles show in the there’s one cell that was developed for 16-year-old boys in gymnasiums should you know it and I even know you know now that I’m not my twenties to work for my body she you know and in to have hit you know there’s certain practices it won’t work because I have stressed and and hips so shove it’s being really honest about what is the healthy practice she and the good news is it because we have literally thousands of styles dear is one that will light everybody up she and any my experience the teacher is day if I were to look at all of my students show up in a cheat a lot and teaching so much they’re not it’s not then slim fit twenty-somethings you know they’re coming to my class me you know it’s its especially when we do like I do a lot of hot the practices in yoga therapy each with zone a/c crummy show up in your pajamas your sweatpants and everyone’s is comfortable and as an aide comptable live in the room chill because shoot people are just real many here to just be with themselves in Dwarka looking coward inch you know it its I think especially as we get older sheesh its we get over that that dramatic Here I am and Ange on her I ash you know it’s me know that life is day there is is that that depth in the quiet and just showing up every day you know some days it’s it’s beautiful and other days it it’s something else inge you know we’re just here on the ride so and then yeah and that’s a in and that’s one of the reasons that with the in the video series that we worked on me know we try to just make it very very simple for people to eat there was Liz no I’m elaborate equipment or in a ride today make this very approachable but you know you what you just said K is acting super important in that has got to do with attitude and feeling confident in just showing up Mikey said but there are cop your class is unique you know you’re in Bali where things may be a little more relaxed if you live in New York City you know you’re probably going to deal embarrassed walking in that door is an idiot so how do you get I’m maybe is mindset that couldn’t do it now you know what I wish day also there did different studios have different vibe speech so there’s a studio cuz I travel a lot and a drop in the studios and wanna make a ver teachers who’s in her sixties she a she teaches in me know Santa Monica ash and 10 walking to class noland wearing a its all people like fifty-plus she and it’s a really comfortable lives so I do think that if you are going to she practice in a studio that there’s so many different kinds of communities and i think thats that’s the gift that their is this thing called the yoga community she and it’s a place where you can find other people who teach have that same mindset so my first you’ll be teaching class and happen to be treated YMCA it was actually all-women each over you know is actually women 55 plus she and it was a great community we all have she afterwards and copy and bring cake inch and a it was great she you know and sometimes you know we had classes the a tie to church and again it was a great you need to gather together she so what I say both to to practitioners such and also the teachers you got fined the place that’s yours you know it’s just they could you go to a restaurant you know you can walk into a restaurant say I this is my place or action you know this isn’t my by pitch and and they’re definitely cuz I like them a little bit more down-home she and when I go around and in practice I find the place where E it’s that down-home feeling she an and they do exist you know it’s hot practiced in Boston and New York and Tokyo and Spain in Sydney and in Los Angeles and I’ve always found in San Francisco that place where there isn’t that pretension or that feeling that you have to be a certain way in there are two eat I think that’s our action at main you can’t you will you walk in the door and there will be that person who’s like hey how are you she you know and and you’ll feel that an annual you’ll be invited to step in a little bit further and at I get it I would totally be nervous my first time she a going to my first yoga class and I was thankful that I’ve been teaching and practicing for so long as they do you understand that anxiety I i get it for other things yeah so I think it is recognizing it that that’s just a response in sometimes that’s when you grab a buddy to go or just even realize our eight I’m gonna have an anxiety for the first five minutes she in or 10 minutes and that’s just what it’s gonna be like the ones I’m on a Mac I’m gonna be fine she you know and yeah that’s great advice and I did a lot of love women too over the years learn how to be a little bit and immune to to the stereotypes and criticism and I think our community is should we talk about that a lot you know that we can feel that nervousness as we go into that kind of thing but we don’t really honesty care what people think about it that much import you know honestly but the other is this other things a question can do and and you can do a video series in your home you know we don’t have to go to a sad Oriakhi said you can start your own group in a church or community center but I think the advice on finding your you’re you’re tried %um you’re right one but inducted as a final back that and maybe it’s about and about okay is that its I am overweight on plus size an upgrade I don’t fit into those little leggings and I just can’t even bend in those positions and we did an article on this about plus-size and women and there are some yoga a centers starting but generally speaking what’s the what’s the message to women with a little extra weight sheesh yoga is the practice and loving yourself and loving your body each and what I’ve noticed both in myself but also especially with all my students huge then plus sized is dead said only that practices yoga and each and 32 realigned body in shot the tension and pain she suddenly the weight factor drops away hmm and it made their is interesting thing where shadley author to tone up a little bit without even realizing it just from the simple movements so but its it to get it done in this loving attitude so she you start to get to know the geometry of your body and and I think YouTube it can be one of the most healing practices when there’s any sort ish body image are you notion because what woman doesn’t have that in my experience she he okay it’s it’s the best thing you know and and the reality is we all have different body sizes you know in an eight-minute for Brion she sometimes if your breasts are largely got a minute mile away and then she you know any and it is and it’s something that’s helpful I mean we all need these different kinds accused is to learn how to be an our body she and and and that I think where again it goes back to yoga is not about church fitting into a certain pose it’s really about making the practice works for you you know i i disagree.
